Types of Diamond Clarities

Natural diamonds are created by exposing the carbon to tremendous pressure and heat deep in the earth. This process of creating diamonds leads to numerous internal characteristics like ‘inclusions’ and a variety of external characteristics like blemishes. Evaluating the clarity of a diamond depends on the number, relief, nature, size, and position of these internal and external characteristics along with how these characteristics are overall affecting the appearance of the stone.

Types of Clarities

Diamond Clarity is nothing but working on the removal of blemishes and exclusion. However, remember that no diamond is perfectly pure but certain processes can help in attaining the best clarity for a diamond. The more the diamond is pure, the better is its clarity. On the basis of clarity that diamond possesses, diamond clarities are divided into the following types.

  • Flawless (FL): Flawless diamonds are those that have no blemishes and no inclusions visible under the 10x magnification.
  • Internally Flawless (IF): Internally Flawless diamonds are those whose internal characteristics i.e., inclusions are not visible under the 10x magnification.
  • Very - Very Slightly (VVS1 & VVS2) Included: VVS1 & VVS2 are those that have very slight inclusions but are very difficult for skilled graders to see under 10x magnification.
  • Very Slightly (VS1 & VS2) Included: In diamond lying under VS1 & VS2 category, the inclusions can be observed under 10x magnification but with a lot of effort, and these inclusions are characterized as very minor inclusions.
  • Slightly Included (SI1 & SI2): SI1 & SI2 are those grade diamonds that have inclusions visible under 10x magnification.
  • Included (I1, I2 & I3): In Included diamonds, all the inclusions that a diamond possesses are obvious under 10x magnification. And visibility of these inclusions affects the brilliance and transparency of the diamond.

Many blemishes and inclusions are too tiny to be seen by visible eyes. Only a trained diamond grader can distinguish these types. To a normal person, SI2 and VS1 may look exactly the same. However, these diamonds are very different in terms of their overall quality. This is why before buying a diamond, an accurate assessment of the clarity of the diamond by an expert is really important. Understanding the proper diamond clarity helps you in knowing the factors that lead to the price and quality of a diamond.
